             4 March 2010 - NEW DVD AVAILABLE

The CAPE BRETON GENEALOGY & HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION is pleased to advise that CBGHA member Thom McCabe has completed the digitizing of the CAPE BRETON COUNTY MARRIAGE RECORDS for the 1890’s only. A great deal of time and effort were required to produce such a project and we offer our thanks to Thom for a job well done.

Most records contain information on the bride and groom; where they lived, where they were born, how they were employed; there may also be information on the parents of the bride and groom. Marriage records can be a great source of information. The records contain several types of documents such as: slips, bonds, licenses, banns or affidavits.

A number of the original records were incorrectly filed by year and incorrectly named; we have corrected these problems where possible. Some of the original records have incomplete dates and we filed them in what we considered to be the most appropriate area. We did not change any of the actual records. We have separated the records in files by years and then sorted them alphabetically. These records are copies of the original records and some are in poor condition and difficult to read. We found a few records from counties already completed and have placed them in a Strays file. We do not wish to convey the idea that there were no other marriages performed in CapeBretonCounty at this time; these are the records that were recorded with the Nova Scotia Government. Every reasonable effort was made to make these records as accurate as possible but there is a possibility of human error in all projects.

Our file names on the records are: Last name of groom, last names of bride, date of document. . As with our previous DVDs, this new material can be searched by husband’s surname or wife’s maiden name or date with the Windows search function or you may choose to simply scroll through the records. You can choose to search by year or the whole DVD. We also recommend scrolling slowing through the records, you may find many interesting facts you were not expecting.

We are confident that people using these records will find them informative and helpful in their genealogy research of Cape Breton County

The  CAPE BRETON COUNTY MARRIAGE RECORDS for the 1890’s only DVD contains  3335 entries; by comparison Inverness County Marriages DVD,  1862 to 1908 contains 2269 entries -  Richmond County Marriages, DVD, 1849 to 1918 contains 2674 entries – Victoria County Marriages DVD, 1864 to 1918 contains 2120 entries. As you can see there were many more marriages in this one decade of only 1890’s than occurred in the other counties for a much longer period of time.

This DVD is priced at $25.00 including postage & handling.

SEARCH  TECHNIQUES & TIPS

By Kevin  Podgursky

From the initial search screen you can do some powerful searching using some basic techniques; we all know if we type in our SURNAME of interest, we get every page that contains that SURNAME.

But what about searching for variations on our SURNAME?

Well, we can now do that, with the new search capabilities at CBGHA

 Example -   podgurski OR podgursky

Will give me every page on the website with either the PODGURSKY name or the variation PODGURSKI

Now you can save time in your MC and MAC searches by including them on the same line

Example - macdonald OR mcdonald will give you all pages with either of the spellings.

Of course, that would produce a massive list to look though.

So, here is another hint.

Example - podgursky OR podgurski "albert"

the apostrophe means AND, so we get all the pages that have Podgursky OR Podgurski, but only those pages that have

Podgursky OR Podgurski     AND    Albert

So the search would give a page that contained Albert and Podgursky. It would also give a page that had Albert and Podgurski.

Another example is the KANE name

Typing Kane Cain Cane would search for pages that contained all three of those

surnames on it.

However; Kane OR Cane OR Cain would yield pages that contained any of those variations We could them look for Margaret, using the apostrophes, with any of our

variations kane OR cane OR cain "margaret"

Using the Advanced Search we can save ourselves some typing, and maybe a few grey hairs trying to remember whether to use OR, Apostrophes, etc.

Click on Search, and just below the input screen, click on the link for Advanced Search.

Just looking at the left side we see:

Containing any of the words

Containing the phrase

Containing none of the words.

So for kane OR cane OR cain "margaret"

we would type in the box below

Containing any of the words

kane cane cain

 and in the box below

Containing the phrase

margaret

and click the advanced search button.

After the search yields your results, you can see in the search box, (the box under Enter your keywords:) kane OR cane OR cain "margaret"The server typed in the OR, and the apostrophes for you.

You can further use the Advanced Search page to limit your results to just newspapers, or cemeteries.

 You can also exclude results

Looking for MacNeil's on Christmas Island not from Barra?

macneil OR mcneil -barra "christmas island"

Or with the advanced search page

 Containing any of the words

Macneil mcneil

 containing the phrase

christmas island

 containing none of the words

barra
